Music teachers throughout the years have listened
to "Für Elise" played over and over by generations
of piano students. No one knows for sure who "Elise" was.
Perhaps it was Theresa Malfatti, a woman who Beethoven was
thought to have been in love with, but no evidence exists to
support this theory.
"Für Elise" is classified as a bagatelle, Opus 173,
written in 1810, during a time when Beethoven was afflicted
by increasing deafness.
"Für Elise" should be performed with a very legato
style except where accents are indicated. The singers must
take care not to let the eighth notes "hang over" and above
all, do not rush the tempo.
