The Humming Chorus

Originally premiered on February 17, 1904, "Madame Butterfly" was less than a success. Puccini immediately withdrew the opera and revised it. Approximately thirty pages of music were changed by the time the opera re-opened to wide spread acclaim on May 28th of the same year.

"The Humming Chorus" occurs at the conclusion of Act II. Suzuki (Cho-Cho San's servant), Cho-Cho-San's child (Trouble) and Cho-Cho San (Butterfly) are gazing out over the harbor waiting for the arrival of the ship the Abraham Lincoln, Pinkerton's ship. Suzki and the child fall asleep but Butterfly continues to stare out over the harbor as the act closes.

"The Humming Chorus" is and excellent work for teaching falsetto and dynamic control in the upper register. It should be sung sensitively and with the knowledge of the tragic story of "Madame Butterfly".
