The Magic Flute was Mozart's last opera. It was first performed in Vienna at the Theater auf der Wieden, September 30, 1791. Mozart died a little over two months later on December 5, 1791 at the age of 36.
There is so much to be said about "The Magic Flute" and its representation of Freemasonry, from the mysterious "three knocks on the door" represented by the opening set of three chords to the representation of actual personalities by the characters in the opera. The surprise comes as the singer and listener find the parallels in Freemasonry and the opera.
Singers may perform the complete overture or the abbreviated version (ending at measure 96) Teachers/conductors should play a recording of the overture for singers to duplicate the orchestra sounds. The rhythm in measures 43 - 45 (alto), 84 - 87 (soprano II), 88 - 91 (alto), 94 (alto and soprano II), 158 - 160, 196 - 201 (alto) has been modified to make the overture slightly (this piece is difficult enough) easier for the alto and soprano II.
